MAGGIE’S FAMILY (DVD)

• First play the whole clip without pauses.
• Play for a second time:
  • 1st pause – Steve is looking for his necklace. Pause the DVD when a photo of Steve’s necklace appears as a memory on the screen and drill the word.
  • 2nd pause – When Maggie is on the ground and looking at something shiny say “What is it, children? Mm, it’s shiny“. Elicit “it’s a necklace“. Or “it’s Steve’s necklace“ from the children.
  • 3rd pause – Maggie calls for her sister, Martha, to help her pull the necklace from the ground. When Martha flies over, ask the children “Is this Maggie’s brother?“ Ellicit “No“. Is this Maggie’s sister? Ellicit “Yes“. Drill as a class “It’s Maggie’s sister” if required.
  • 4th pause – Maggie calls her brother, Martin, to help them. When Martin flies over, ask the same questions “Is this Maggie’s dad?“ Ellicit “No“. Is this Maggie’s brother?“ Ellicit “Yes“. Drill as a class “It’s Maggie’s brother“ if required.
• Repeat the above for Maggie’s Mum and Dad.
• Pause again when everyone is trying to pull out Steve’s necklace from the ground. Invite a child to come to the screen and point at a family member for the rest of the class to name. Ask the class “Who is this?“ and/or “What’s her/his name?“
• For more advanced children watch again in the future and focus on the use of the modal verb can/can’t. Pause the clip as above but change the subject of each question to “Can Maggie/Maggie’s sister Martha /Maggie’s brother Martin /Maggie’s mum /Maggie’s dad /do it?“ Elicit “No” each time except for when the whole family tries and the answer is obviously “Yes”.
