PLAYGROUND BUILDER
(Transport)
Subject: Humans and their world
Cross-curricular links: English language, Art
Target language: see-saw, climbing frame, slide, swimming pool, bench, swing; numbers 1-6
Language structures: How many (slides) are there? – There are (2 slides)/How many (slides) have you got? – I’ve got…
Time: 30 minutes
Materials: worksheet, crayons, dice
- Give children a worksheet with two tasks.
- The first task is easy and does not take too much time: children mark what they can see in a playground: "What can you see in a playground? Tick the pictures.”
- Name marked pictures.
- The second task is a creative one: Write numbers 1 to 6 on the blackboard. These numbers represent the sides of dice: “We are going to build a playground.”
- Next to each number, draw objects from the playground that will later be used for creating students’ playground. For example:
1 slide
2 swimming pool
3 climbing frame
4 swing
5 see-saw
6 bench - Children take turns in rolling the dice: “Roll the dice.” According to the number they get, they find out which object to draw in their plan, i.e. if they get 5, they draw a see-saw; if they get another 5, they draw another see-saw. They will thus end up with a playground with various numbers of individual objects: "If you get 5, draw a see-saw."
- The game is over as soon as the playground has at least one of each: "When you have got everything in your playground, stop."
- If you want to extend this activity, have children colour and describe the playground (how many see-saws, roundabouts, sand pits, etc. there are). “Colour the playground and say what you have got there.”
