DOMINOES
(Mathematics)
Subject: Mathematics
Cross-curricular links: English language
Time: 10 minutes
Materials: domino game
- The children form pairs. Players sitting opposite each other play against another pair.
- Spread all tiles on the desk face down and shuffle them carefully.
- Each player recieves a number of tiles given by the teacher. He/she stands the tiles so that the other players cannot see them.
- The teacher determines the pair that starts the game (the tile with the highest number of dots). The player selects one of his/her tiles and places it in the centre of the desk.
- The next player selects such a tile that has, at least on one side, the same number of dots as the end half of the tile representing the end of the line on the desk. He/she places this tile at the end of the line so that the sides with the same number of dots touch.
- The tile may only be placed at one of the ends of the line. No tiles may be added in the middle of the line.
- Player without a suitable tile says ’next’. A player must not give up his/her turn if he/she can play.
- Once a player puts down his/her last tile, the game is over. All other pairs have the dots on their tiles, or the tiles they hold in their hands, counted. The pair with lowest number of dots wins.
- The game also ends in case not one of the players can continue.
Variation:
Picture dominoes may be used. At the end of the game children name the pictures.
