DICE PONTOON
(Mathematics)
Subject: Mathematics
Cross-curricular links: English language
Time: 15 minutes
Materials: dice
- Each student has a dice (the teacher has one too).
- Write a number on the blackboard, e.g. 17 (depending on how many can the students count to). This number represents a limit for the addition of numbers on a dice.
- Explain to your students how to throw the dice. They throw the dice as long as you do not exceed 17. They therefore have to decide whether to throw the dice one more time or not, in order not to exceed the number given.
- Throw the dice and write down the number (teacher can write on the blackboard, students on a sheet of paper). Total the numbers. First person to reach the total of 17 call the number out and wins (or person with total nearest to 17). Students who exceeded 17 are out of the game.
- For example:
1th throw – gets 3
2nd throw – gets 1; that is 3 + 1 = 4
3rd throw – gets 5; that is 5 + 4 = 9
4th throw – gets 2; that is 2 + 9 = 11 (you can still roll the dice)
5th throw – gets 6; that is 6 + 11 = 17 (excellent!)
Extension activity:
Eventually, let students count by how much they missed 17: “How many more or less have you rolled?”
