(Celebrations)
Subject: Art
Cross-curricular links: English language, Humans and their world
Language structures: What would you like for Christmas? - I’d like a/an (noun).
Time: 20 minutes
Materials: DVD player
- Watch the DVD clip Twinkle, twinkle little star without pausing for the first time but encouraging the children to sing along.
- Watch a second time but pause when Steve and Maggie hold up their stockings and ask “What’s Steve drawing? What is it? Is it a teddy bear?”. Encourage the children to guess if they can’t remember from the first viewing.
- Finally say “Happy Christmas” to Steve and Maggie, and if you have a Christmas tree in the classroom, ask the children to help you decorate the tree whilst singing Twinkle, twinkle little star. Audio file available from www.english-time.eu. “Come on children, let’s decorate our Christmas tree”.
Extension Activity:
Give the children a copy of the stocking filler handout (as seen on the DVD), into which the children should draw what they want for Christmas “Draw what you would like for Christmas in the stocking“. Then ask each pupil to show you their drawing and ask what they have drawn by saying “What would you like for Christmas?“ To encourage then to name what they have drawn. If they don’t know the word in English, try to guess from their drawing and then model and drill the word, or (in emergencies) use a dictionary.
