EASTER EGG HUNT
(Celebrations)
Subject: Mathematics
Cross-curricular links: English language, Humans and their world
Target language: numbers 1 – 10, egg(s)
Time: 20 minutes
Materials: chocolate eggs in various wrappers, handout, coloured crayons
- Ask the children to close their eyes for a moment “Close your eyes, please.“
- Hide the chocolate eggs around the classroom (you could do it before they enter the classroom to avoid some inevitable cheating).
- Ask the children to find the eggs “Find chocolate eggs. Where are the eggs?“ If you want to give the children hints to direct them to the eggs, use the phrases, “you’re cold" , “warmer” and “hot“.
- When the children find the eggs elicit where they found them “Was this egg under the chair? On the table? in the cup?” etc.
- Tell the children to return all the eggs to you and place them in a basket. Then they sort them according to the colours of their wrappers and count them. Finally distribute the eggs evenly and the children can eat them.
- When everything is cleared away, show the children the handout and demonstrate how they should look for and colour the same patterned eggs in the same colour. They count them and write down the numbers in the spaces provided.
- Walk around the classroom commenting in the children’s work and help them with the extra mathematical sums also on the worksheet.
Variation:
A similar worksheet can be prepared with a Christmas theme (Hidden Christmas presents): Hide Christmas presents in the classroom wrapped in differently patterned wrapping paper, or already unwrapped presents – toys. It can also be prepared with a Halloween theme (Hidden pumpkins/ghosts) – hide pumpkins and/or ghosts in a house and/or garden.
