WHAT TIME IS IT?
(Time and Seasons of the Year)
Subject: Humans and their world
Cross-curricular links: English language
Target language: Numbers 1–12
Language structures: What’s the time? - It’s (2) o’clock; Is it (2) o’clock? – Yes, it is/No, it isn’t.
Time: 10 minutes
Materials: a clock
- Use the paper clock to show the children the time, telling them what it is you do at the given time.
- Select one student and lend him/her the clock. He/she sets a time. The student then asks the rest of the class: “What time is it?” The other students guess the time: “Is it 7 o’clock?”; “Is it 12:30?”; etc.
Variation 1:
Selected student sets the time at will, asking the others: “What time is it?” The rest of the class try to find out the time using questions: “Do you get up? Do you go to bed? Do you play football?” etc.
Variation 2:
Students ask one another in pairs. One of the pair moves the clock hand; the other guesses the time. Then, they switch roles. The dialogue may be extended using other questions: “What time do you get up/ have a shower/ go to school/ eat dinner?
Variation 3:
With more advanced students, this topic may be used for presentation (passive at first) of the third person singular. As an aid, you can use pictures from either the textbook or any other book/magazine, and describe what a person does at a given time. “Honza gets up at 6 o’clock.; This girl travels by bus every morning.; This man walks to work at 7. Then, with your help, children talk about what their friend does at a given time (based on information gained from Version 2).
