(Time and Seasons of the Year)

Subject: Music
Cross-curricular links: English language, Humans and their world
Target language: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday; week
Time: 10 minutes
Materials: music CD, a set of cards with the days of the week

  • Each child gets a card with a day of the week (colour coded for easy recognition – write all the Monday cards with a blue marker pen, Tuesdays with yellow, etc. or write directly onto coloured paper). At the same time tell each child what day of the week they are: “You’ve got (Monday).“
  • Play the music and let the children move about to the rhythm “Listen and dance.“
  • Stop the music and call out: “Week!“ The children form circles of seven, each with their days of the week, Monday to Sunday.
  • Play the music again and let the children dance.
  • Stop the music and call out: “Days!“ The children form groups of ’Mondays’, ’Tuesdays’, etc.
  • Repeat several times.

Variation 1:

Change the groups the children have to get into between days or the week and the colours their word is written on.

Variation 2:

Similarly you can practice the months of the year. Call out “Year!” and the children get into groups of twelve and form a line according to the months of the year. Call out "Months!” and the children get into groups of Januaries, Februaries, etc. In case there are odd numbers of pupils, join in yourself, or give each child two consecutive months.
