WHAT ARE YOU WEARING? (DVD)
(Clothes)
Subject: Humans and their world
Cross-curricular links: English language
Target language: shoes, socks, t-shirt, trousers atd.
Time: 10 minutes
Materials: DVD player
- In this clip Steve is wearing all his clothes in the wrong places and looks quite silly. If the children are laughing along with Maggie ask them why, “Why are you laughing?” pretending not to see then realising “Hey, look at Steve, he looks crazy.”
- Then settle the children down to watch the rest of the DVD clip.
- Before the second viewing, clear a space next to the screen and put up a large piece of paper whereupon you have drawn a life sized outline of a child.
- Pause the DVD each time Steve removes an item of clothing and with the children participating drill the items of clothing.
- When you have paused the DVD, select a child at random to come to the front and take from you the corresponding clothes flashcard and place it in the correct place on your drawing. You can say “Where do/does the (shoes/T-shirt) go? Can you put it on the picture?”
- Take the opportunity to re-drill as required and, perhaps, ask the children “How many (red) (T-shirts) can you see?”
- Be sure to make a pause at the part where Steve is finally dressed correctly and ask the children to name by themselves the clothes Steve is wearing, “What’s Steve wearing?” Next ask what Maggie is wearing, “What’s Maggie wearing?”
- Finally say goodbye to Steve and Maggie and if you have time, use the finished flashcard annotated drawing to review the target vocabulary.
Extension Activity:
Ask the children to draw Steve before and after he gets dressed properly. Comment on the children’s work and ask “What’s Steve wearing here? What’s this?” Etc.
