PACKING A SUITCASE
(Clothes)

Subject: Humans and their world
Cross-curricular links: English language
Time: 10 minutes
Materials: flashcards

  • Draw an open suitcase on the blackboard and place picture cards on a magnetic board.
  • Tell your students you are going on a winter holiday to the mountains and ask them what you should take with you: “We are going on holidays to the mountains. What should we pack in the suitcase?”
  • Students select a picture, name it, and place it in the suitcase.
  • Also, you may ask them what else they would pack that is not in the pictures: "What else do you want to pack and it isn’t in the pictures?"
  • This time students answer without pictures, using words they know (the teacher either finds the relevant picture in his/her set of picture cards or draws it on the blackboard).
  • Eventually, as a group, you may name objects that are un/important to have with you: “Which things are very important to take/not to forget?”; “Which things aren’t important?" For example, it is very important to pack warm clothes when going to the mountains, but when you forget to pack a book, it is not a problem: “Warm clothes are very important, a book isn’t important."

Variation 1:

Students may work with a worksheet with pictures of various objects and an open suitcase. They decide what to take with them, cut individual pictures out and glue them into the suitcase. Then they describe what they packed into the suitcase.

Variation 2:

The goal of the journey may be changed. Aside from winter holidays, you may go on summer holidays; visit grandma who lives in a village; or go cycling, sleeping in a tent; etc.

Variation 3:

Within this activity, more advanced students may practise modal verbs should, shouldn’t, have to, don’t have to (I should pack; I shouldn’t forget; I have to pack; I don’t have to pack).
