Subject: Humans and their world
Cross-curricular links: English language, Humans and the world of work
Target language: dress, hat, head, jacket, jumper, shoes, skirt, trousers; boy, girl
Time: 15 minutes
Materials: magazines, newspapers, scissors, glue, paper
- Ask the children to cuts out a face that they like from a magazine or newspaper and to stick it on to a piece of paper. You can say ”Please cut out a nice face” while you point to and circle your face.
- Then lead the children through a similar process with various items of clothing. Say ”Please find and cut out a (hat)”. You might wish to prepare all the pictures with the children during an activity lesson.
- Then instruct the children to put together a figure from the cut out pictures and glue it all to the paper.
- Walk around the classroom and comment on the children’s work asking them to describe what their character is wearing. Elicit the simple noun or for more advanced children try for the full sentence. “[He/she is wearing (a) noun]’
- You may like to end this activity by making a display or show the whole class the best pictures.
Extension Activity:
Create a catwalk through the middle of the classroom and hold a fashion show. The children can either dress up and model the clothes themselves or model the picture they made in the core activity by walking up and down the catwalk. You can narrate the show or (after giving the children time to prepare) help each child to do it instead. You will need to introduce and drill “This model is wearing a (colour) (clothes noun)“.
