HAPPY CLOWN
(Body)
Subject: Art
Cross-curricular links: English language, Humans and the world of work
Target language: arm, body, eyes, head, hair, hand, leg, mouth, nose; hat, shoes; blue, green, orange, pink, red, yellow; circle, heart, rectangle, star, triangle
Time: 15 minutes
Materials: paper card, scissors, string, coloured self-adhesive paper
- Prior to the lesson draw a clown on some card and cut out the body parts individually, i.e. 1 head with hair and a hat, a torso, arms and hands, legs and clown shoes. The bigger the clown the better.
- Using the self-adhesive coloured paper, cut out a sufficient number of various shapes (circles, triangles, squares, hearts, stars). The shapes can be prepared by you or together with the children in an activity lesson so that each pupil gets around 2 or 3 different shapes.
- First ask the children to help put together the parts of the clown (work on the floor): “Let’s make a clown. Ok, where’s his head? And his body? What’s this? Yeah, this is his arm“ etc.
- When the clown is complete make small holes in each limb so you can fix each part of the clown together using the string.
- The clown can be hung up before you ask the children to fetch their cut out shapes
- Tell the children where they should stick the shapes, say: “Stick the yellow stars on his legs, please“, etc. The children who have got yellow stars go and stick them on the clown’s legs (moisten the paper with a wet sponge or finger if necessary).
- When the clown has a suitably fancy costume, draw on eyes, a nose and a mouth, and colour the hair. The children count how many different shapes are on his clothes.
- The clown can become a new class friend and take part in other activities. The children can even give it a name.
