Time: 15 minutes
Materials: flashcards, dice
- On the floor create a large playing area using a wide selection of pictures and/or flashcards. You can put the cards next to each other in the shape of a snake or as a large circle to make a standard ’roll the dice board game’ on a very large scale.
- Randomly place blue and red sheets of paper between the cards and tell the children that “these are special cards” and if a player steps on a blue sheet of paper they can roll the dice again: “Take another turn“ but if a player steps on a red piece of paper they must return to the beginning: “Go back to the beginning.”
- The first pupil rolls the dice and according to the number moves along the cards: “Take (three) steps forward.”
- Whichever card they land on ask as a class: ”What is it?“ and encourage the child to name the picture: “It’s a/an (noun)" If they do not know the word or do not name the picture correctly they have to return to where they started from: “Go back to where you started from, back (3) steps.”
- The first pupil to get to the end wins.
