Subject: Art
Cross-curricular links: English language, Humans and their world, Humans and the world of work
Language structures: I want to be a/an…, Do you want to be a/an …? - Yes, I do./No I don’t.
Time: 20 minutes
Materials: crayons/paints, paper, flashcards/an enlarged copy of the worksheet
- Attach an enlarged copy of the picture showing children playing at various jobs to the board.
- Ask the children if any of them wants to become a (doctor). You can say “Look at the picture. This boy wants to be a doctor”.
- Select a child to come to the board and point to the relevant child in the picture and match it with the corresponding job flashcard.
- Ask several children “Do you want to be a (doctor)?” and elicit “Yes I do” or “No I don’t” until you eventually say “Ok, everyone who wants to be a doctor, please put your hand up”. Count the hands as a class.
- Choose a child who doesn’t want to be a doctor and ask them to point to a flashcard or a child in the enlarged picture to indicate what they want to be. Say “What do you want to be?” If the flashcard or picture isn’t there and they do not know the word in English, first try to encourage the children to use gestures or mimes so the teacher can guess and translate. If necessary, use a dictionary. You could prompt with the question, “Do you want to be a (police officer)?” and show the picture.
- Record the results in a class bar chart.
Extension Activity:
Ask the pupils to draw what they want to be when they are older, “Please draw what you want to be when you are older”. While the pupils are drawing, walk amongst them and ask or comment on their work with phrases like “It’s very nice. What do you want to be? What’s this? It looks like a/an (occupation)" and so on. After finishing the pictures invite the pupils to say what they would like to be, “What do you want to be?”
