FISH RACE
(Animals)
Subject: Humans and the world of work
Cross-curricular links: English language, Humans and their world
Language structures: comparison of fast, slow, possessive ’S
Time: 20 minutes
Materials: thin paper; card; pencils; scissors
- Cut the shape of a fish body from the thin paper (for small children, you may prepare a pattern to draw the fish on their papers quickly).
- Cut out the fish and use the pencil to curl its tail upwards: “Cut a fish out of the paper.”
- Divide the children into five groups: “Make 5 teams.”
- Draw start and finish lines on the floor with a chalk. The first participants from each group place their fish on the start line, with their tails to the students: “Put your fish here.” The children take a sheet of card (they may also use a book or a notebook) to create a draught, making the fish move forward: “Make a draught like this to make your fish swim.”
- The fish that crosses the finish line first wins the race.
- Ask the children: “Whose fish was faster/slower - Peter’s or Martin’s?”; the children answer back: “Peter’s fish.” You can ask whose fish was the fastest/slowest one: “Whose fish was the fastest/slowest?”
