(Food)
Subject: Humans and their world
Cross-curricular links: English language
Target language: apple, Coca Cola, crisps, onion, pasta, water
Time: 10-15 minutes
Materials: DVD player, flashcards
- Settle the children down to watch the DVD clip Imperfect Picnic.
- During the second viewing continue to play Stand Up(or hands up) If true to help the children understand the concept that Maggie has changed the items in Steve’s picnic and further develop their listening skills.
- Alternatively for the second viewing, and for more advanced children, focus the student’s attention on the like, don’t like and favourite language structure contained within. To do this, clear a space next to the screen where children can stick some flashcards.
- Place a heading which reads “Don’t like :(” near the floor. Above it place another heading which reads “like :)” and at the top a final heading which reads “Favourite :D”. Each with enough room to stick the aforementioned flashcards next to.
- Pause the DVD each time Steve mentions that he likes, doesn’t like something, or that it is his favourite. You will need to be fast to pause in the correct place so some practice is recommended.
- When you have paused the DVD, select a child at random to come to the front and take from you the corresponding flashcard and place it next to the correct heading. Encourage the rest of the class to help and supply their own thoughts.
- Finally say goodbye to Steve and if you have time, use the ’like ladder’ to ask and answer questions about food in a similar ways.
Extension Activity
Ask the children to draw the two different picnics from the DVD clip - the good picnic and the bad picnic. Ask the children to name the items and ask if they like the food items in each of their two pictures and if they have any favourites they can tell you about. To be done with more advanced children if you feel they can cope.
