Introducing through mime and gestures
(Introducing New Language (Warm-up Activities))
Activities which introduce new vocabulary, collocations and sentence structures through using facial expressions and gestures.
Define and Mime
- Explain the activity to children - simply and aptly describe e.g. an animal: "It’s got 8 legs. It’s brown or black. It’s big or small." Simultaneously, mime the animal (its looks, movements).
- If children do not know the English word, then they can call it out in Czech: "Pavouk." Confirm their answer by nodding your head and say: "Yes, very good. It’s a SPIDER."
- Follow the same pattern when introducing other words.
Move Your Body
- Do various movements, e.g. jump. Say: "I can jump." and ask the children: "Can you jump too?" Children cry out: "Yes." Ask them to show you: "Show me, please."
- Follow this pattern in introducing other verbs.
How Are You Feeling?
- Mime momentary physical states and needs. For example, start with I’m hungry. Move your hand over your stomach and use facial expressions. Show children an empty plate and say: "I’m hungry."
- I’m thirsty: Slightly pull out your tongue, breath faster, turn an empty glass upside down and say: "I’m thirsty."
- Follow the same pattern for all phrases.
